Christmas trees are common especially as the season approaches. Decorative pieces like trees, lighting, ribbons and garlands dating back to the Renaissance Era of early Germany and has evolved throughout the world and has been an accepted part of the Christmas culture.

Christmas trees are conifers and firs which grow in the temperate zone of the world but now, even in the tropics, Christmas is not the same without a tree.  The Christmas tree is normally put up on the 23rd of December and it is considered bad luck if it is still up by the 7th January.

Planning on setting up a Christmas tree this holidays? Lamudi Ghana has compiled a few tips to make the tree look beautiful.

Choosing a Tree
There are different types of trees in most retail centers, lifestyle shops and shopping malls with price dependent upon size and type. In most European countries, Christmas trees are erected in the natural state, however in Ghana, they are purchased in their artificial form. They mainly come in two colors; white and green. The color of the Christmas tree should match the color of the room.

There are a number of residences that prefer to decorate naturally cultivated firs with LED lights during this season.

Decorating Christmas Trees
Three types of decorations are needed to bring the Christmas tree to life: garlands, ornaments and lights.

Garlands – They are wreaths made from natural flowers used to decorate doorposts and Christmas trees as well. They are mostly made from plastic or fabric and look best when wrapped from the top of the tree downwards.  They look cluttered when too many are hung on the tree. Red garlands normally go well with the Christmas tree. Other colors can be used as well.

Ornaments – They are accessories that are placed on the tree as well. Many people prefer to put their favorite ornament right in front of the tree where everyone can see them.  The tree itself should also be placed strategically to make it more visible.  Choose jewelry, small balls, candy sticks or anything collected from a shopping trip.  The tree looks even better when the ornaments are better arranged – with the smaller ones on top and the larger ones at the bottom.

Lights – This is what makes the Christmas tree look beautiful, especially at night. Most companies in Ghana drape their buildings with lights to mark the Christmas season. There are a variety of lights that can be used for the tree –  traditional ones, LEDs which are the most common, and globe lights.
